Abstract

"The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit had not been allowed to use breast milk unless it is the patient's mother's own breast milk; therefore some infant's in the unit receive formula for nutrition. The use of formula has been related to higher incidence of NEC infections, feeding intolerance, and leads to a longer amount of time until the infant reaches full feedings. This results in an increased length of stay to work up on feeds and a longer length of time on TPN. It is best practice for Neonatal Intensive Care Units to use donor breast milk instead of formula for pre-term and medically fragile infants. Through the use of donor breast milk in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit we will be able to decrease the risk of feeding intolerance, decreases the length of stay and number of days on TPN, and will also be providing evidence based best practice care to our patient population. Outcomes related to the use of donor breast milk in the NICU include: reduced cost of patient days through a reduced length of stay, reduced days on TPN and improved patient satisfaction related to earlier discharge and decreased feeding intolerance."--Background.
