Abstract
"This publication summarizes information to help you interpret a report from a water testing laboratory and to decide what action to take. It is intended primarily for homeowners with private water supplies (home wells), but environmental organizations, health departments, water testing laboratories and those on public water supplies may find this material of interest. Regular water tests are recommended for all household water systems. Public water supplies are tested regularly in accordance with state and federal regulation. However, there is no law or regulation requiring testing or establishing water quality standards for private supplies. Owners and users of private water supplies are advised to test their water regularly and to interpret the results using the safe drinking water standards for public systems except as noted here." -- first page
