Abstract

"Portable kerosene heater can a valuable temporary heat source for homeowners to use during winter power outages to prevent pipes from freezing, for heating small areas for family comfort until the power is restored. The Consumer Product Safety Commission estimates thar there may be as many as 9 million kerosene heaters in use in consumers' homes. Of those, 5.5 million are unvented heaters. There are a number of potential safety and health, h risks associated with these heaters if they are not properly operated, located, maintained or stored. These risks include fires, burns, asphyxiation, and exposure to combustion by-product such as carbon dioxide, Sulphur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide. According to the recent study conducted by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) supplemental heating equipment, such as a kerosene heater, is the leading cause of home fires during the months of December, January and February. The study found that space heaters accounted for more than two in five home heating fires, as well as the vast majority of deaths (81%) and injuries (80%)."--Page 1.
