Abstract
[ACCESS RESTRICTED TO THE UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI AT AUTHOR'S REQUEST.] Divorced mothers may have challenges managing of type 1 diabetes (T1D) for their children. The purpose of this study was to examine the processes by which divorced mothers with children diagnosed with T1D manage the disease. Open-ended interviews were conducted with 12 mothers who collectively had 13 children with diabetes. Grounded theory methods were used to gather and analyze data. The resulting theory describes the psychosocial process of overwhelming responsibility divorced mothers experience in managing T1D with their children. This process includes cooperating in co-parenting, living with diabetes, and assisting children in taking responsibility.
