Abstract

"In 1604, when Karel van Mander published the first critical assessment of the art of Hans Rottenhammer -- then in his fortieth year -- he emphasized those qualities of grace and refinement with which the artist's name has been associated ever since. "A good colorist," van Mander wrote, Rottenhammer makes "excellent compositions," has a "fine technique," and renders "in beautiful color ... all kinds of beautiful details." Van Mander noted that his pictures were sought by many collectors, and concluded his brief account with the claim that Rottenhammer's "name is worthy of mention with the names of the most artistic painters." The Baptism of Christ, acquired by the Museum of Art and Archaeology in 1971, well exemplifies these virtues, and in its eclectic style, typifies both the art of Rottenhammer and the international character of late sixteenth-century mannerism."--First paragraph.
