Abstract

Centering investigative stories around compelling human characters who have experienced the impact of systemic abuse or injustice is an effective tool in journalistic storytelling. Studies show that those characters, also known as exemplars, strengthen the story and better depict the investigated issues. Because of the sensitive nature of those sources and their experiences, finding exemplars and building trust with them is a challenging process. This research examines interviews with nine award-winning investigative journalists who have successfully connected with exemplar sources and featured those stories in their investigative work. The analysis reveals eight main tips in identifying exemplar sources and establishing trust with them, in addition to other advice on establishing contact and working with exemplar sources
