Abstract

"Alfalfa provides a home for numerous organisms. Its perennial nature and ability to regrow quickly renders it a most suitable habitat for many insects. Fortunately, most of these insects are not destructive to the crop. Many are beneficial insects that feed on the pest species, while some are pollinators or scavengers. However, several insect species are usually present that have the potential to cause economic damage to the crop. The key to managing these pests effectively is knowing whether treatment is necessary and when the treatment should be applied for best results. Successful pest management requires a willingness to scout the alfalfa fields on a frequent basis. No matter how effective the control measure, it is economically effective only when applied at the proper time. The purpose of this guide sheet is to outline the basic steps to scouting alfalfa: how to look, what to look for, and when to take action."--First page.
