Abstract
"It is the purpose of this investigation to ascertain the main facts; that is the cause of failure, type, dimensions, kind and foundation of the dam; for all the dams that have failed in the U.S.A. during the last 27 years. The reason for this investigation is to determine by tabulations the chief cause of failure and the kind of dam that seems to have the greatest tendency to fail. The interest in these various causes is, that by finding out which ones are the most prevalent, a further study and investigation can be carried on and these special causes given weight in the design and construction of dams."
