Abstract
In the public health model, private and public stakeholders must effectively work together to protect the public from disease (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2016). During the Covid-19 pandemic, the public health model was disrupted and overwhelmed to the detriment of those it serves (University of Delaware, 2021). This project examines a portion of the public health model -- the vital health information passed from state health agencies to media outlets. Using the agenda setting theory, this project looked at the similarities and differences among the media statements and press releases issued by the top three states with the highest vaccination rate (Rhode Island, Vermont, and Massachusetts) compared to those of the three states with the lowest vaccination rates (Alabama, Mississippi, and Wyoming). The content analysis of these media materials will help inform the communications approach in future times of crisis.
