Abstract
Picture This is a collection of short stories featuring a series of strong female protagonists wrestling with questions of identity and belonging. This collection seeks to explore the tension between faith and doubt, illusion and reality, hope and despair—while providing social commentary regarding the treatment of women in conservative religious spaces, as well as in American culture more broadly. Themes of abuse, anxiety, motherhood, mental illness, and religious struggle permeate this collection. Protagonists routinely pursue self-destructive ends—chasing after illusory dreams or longing for oblivion and even punishment. Despite these hindrances, characters repeatedly reach for redemption and stories are often laced with glimmers of hope.
