Abstract
SCOPE AND PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: This study of the ideas of American Catholic opinion-makers is centered on the controversial issues of Soviet recognition (1917-1933) and the nonrecognition of Peking (1949-1962). The relationship between Catholics and these two diplomatic problems is worthy of individual attention. It is proposed that (1) a definite Catholic interest emerged on the question of recognizing Communist governments, (2) the recognition debates concerning Moscow and Peking are deserving of special consideration due to their duration and intensity, and (3) the topic of recognition is of basic importance to other diplomatic problems and therefore offers a convenient approach to a greater understanding of those problems.
