" This source book was planned for professional workers interested in increasing their understanding of problems of poverty and of subject matter in the areas of Family Life and Family Economics. It is developed from talks, films, discussions and resource materials presented at an interagency, interdisciplinary short course "Understanding the Disadvantaged," held on the Columbia campus of the University of Missouri in July 1965. This conference was designed not only to increase awareness and understanding of the problems of poverty in our society, but also to develop appreciation of the role of the various disciplines and agencies in an effective approach to the situation. It was designed, too, to point the w ay for conferences of similar nature as well as action programs which, it is hoped, will follow at local and district levels. Individuals working with the disadvantaged should find real challenge and opportunity for depth study from this source book."--Foreword.
