Abstract

This paper describes an expert system for manufacturing process selection in the early part of the design phase. Often the designer commits to a particular manufacturing process and goes on to design the part keeping that process in mind. Each process is limited in its ability to produce functions like surface finish, tolerance, batch size and shape. Demand for better surface finish or closer tolerances than what the process is capable of providing, results in extra cost. The expert system eliminates this extra cost by providing all the possible optimum processes that are consistent with the requirement, in very early stages of the design. The program uses object-oriented programming for pruning the processes. It was developed on the Xerox 1186 and will be a precursor to a much larger and more comprehensive system.
