Abstract

Generation Z (Gen Z) teachers comprise the newest generation of educators. Since Gen Z has distinct characteristics and needs as employees, district and building leaders need to implement specific supports in order to develop and retain Gen Z teachers; however, little research has been conducted on how these new teachers are coping in the field of education. The purpose of this research study is to help district and building leaders consider actionable steps they can implement to meet the distinct needs of Gen Z teachers in order to develop their skill sets and retain them. To effectively retain Gen Z teachers, district and building leaders must consider best practices for both Gen Z employee retention and best practices for teacher retention. Teacher attrition is at an all-time high with predictors of worsening teacher attrition such as high burnout and low rates of job satisfaction. Retention rates are even lower for teachers of color and rural teachers. Using a phenomenological research approach, I studied five Gen Z teachers across a variety of settings to learn about their experiences as new teachers and make recommendations for district and building leaders. The research study revealed specific practices, policies, and incentives that are influential in the retention of Gen Z teachers and within the scope of administrators such as principals and superintendents.
