Text from page 1: "For a comprehensive study of Antony's relations to the Orient, it is necessary to take up in some detail the proconsulship of Gabinius in Syria, for it was as commander of the cavalry that Antony first became acquainted with the problems of the land which was to play so important a part in his later life. At the expiration of his consulship, Gabinius sucoeeded to Syria (57 B.C.). On account of the disturbed conditions there, Rome began to appoint for this country proconsuls with the power to levy troops and to engage in war."
