Abstract

"The objective of this study is to reveal the possibilities of development in Greek agriculture through the use of credit. Greece, like many other countries of the world, depends mostly on agriculture for the utilization of labor, for the aquisition of foreign exchange, and for a supply of raw materials appropriate in its domestic industries. Agriculture, however, is only one of several sectors of the economy. Farm people, like industrial workers, use goods and services of other trades. Any attempt to solve agricultural problems will affect materially other economic sectors. Credit seems to be of particular importance in aiding economic development; but it is doubtful whether credit alone can solve the problems of agriculture. Improvement in this industry should be coordinated with development in the non-farm sectors. In this study, an attempt is made to show some of these relationships and to suggest policies that will be most useful in raising the standard of living of farm people through wise use of credit. Unfortunately the remoteness of Greece from the United States, where the study has been made; the lack of necessary references available to the author; and difficulties in interpreting data that have been modified greatly by inflationary trends, has presented serious obstacles in achieving the goal for which the study was intended. Despite these limitations, the study reveals many important facts that can be used in framing future policies for agriculture."--Preface.
