Abstract

Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) is a multidisciplinary approach encompassing tiered interventions that address a range of student needs. However, a gap exists in the understanding and implementation of MTSS. particularly regarding the involvement of occupational therapy practitioners (OTPs) in the elementary school setting. OTPs play a vital role in supporting children in the school setting through collaborative efforts with teachers, providing direct and indirect services, and working on multidisciplinary teams. Administration support, teachers' understanding of occupational therapy (OT), and the lack of resources provided to OTPs are barriers to the effective implementation and utilization of MTSS OT interventions. This capstone explores the effectiveness of OTP involvement in MTSS interventions in the school setting by developing a flowchart outlining the OTP role in MTSS and conducting a tier one intervention in-service about ergonomic seating for students in all classroom environments. Resources including classroom-wide intervention strategies and pre- and post-surveys will be utilized to evaluate MTSS utilization rates in the district and teachers understanding and utilization of tier one supports recommended by OTPs. By incorporating Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles and the push-in model, this project aims to promote OTP-teacher collaboration, improve intervention generalization, and foster student success in a variety of educational settings.
