Abstract

"Streptococcus pyogenes (Group A Beta-hemolytic strep) is the most common cause of acute pharyngitis, accounting for 15-30 percent of cases of acute pharyngitis in children and 5-10 percent of cases in adults. Besides causing pharyngitis, Streptococcus pyogenes can also cause scarlet fever, rheumatic fever, kidney disease, or tonsilar abscesses. Culturing for this organism aids in the diagnosis so that antibiotic therapy may be initiated promptly to relieve symptoms, to avoid sequelae, and to reduce transmission. Although rapid antigen tests may provide early diagnosis, culture remains the 'gold standard's and the national advisory committees recommend confirmation of negative rapid antigen test results with a conventional throat culture."--Background.
