Abstract
"Since the ACA was implemented, Emergency Departments (ED) nationwide have seen an influx of patients resulting in visit counts unlike they had seen previously (Lin et al, 2018). While EDs were seen as environments to evaluate and treat emergent situations, EDs are filling with patients that are seeking treatment for non-emergent and chronic conditions. One estimate of non-emergent care provided in the ED placed the value as high as $65 billion per year (Jaffe et al, 2018). ED throughput is increasingly under examination at hospitals across the country. One intervention that has been examined in multiple EDs to increase throughput is the utilization of a Provider in Triage (PIT)."--Introduction.
