Abstract
Supporting gifted learners in the general education classroom can be difficult, as educators may lack awareness of best practices with gifted learners. By identifying and addressing training needs related to gifted learners, educators can better serve gifted learners. This mixed methods explanatory sequential study examined educator awareness of gifted learners' attributes and needs in the general education setting and current strategies that educators apply with gifted students in their general education setting. The quantitative results revealed lack of undergraduate training and lack of professional development on gifted students, which leaves educators guessing how best to educate gifted students in the general education classroom. The qualitative one-on-one interviews Revealed educators' current awareness of this population of students and brought insight into ways to address professional development in this area. By sharing results from this study and tailoring professional development to match teacher needs in this school district, and other similar contexts, results from this study could have implications for practicing educators, with direct impact on gifted students' daily classroom experiences.
