Abstract

The development of a novel and less expensive approach to the quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring (QCM-D) is explored. Using a vector network analyzer (VNA) to measure harmonic ranges from the primary to the 89th harmonic of a 5 MHz crystal. The fast read and processing ability of the VNA let us monitor the change in frequency, full width at half max, and amplitude. This data allowed us to monitor the resonant changes on the desired harmonics producing a QCM-D. The use of a simple VNA and an in house made crystal resonant housing unit allowed us to achieve our goals.
