Abstract

Introduction: First Chance for Children strives to foster healthy outcomes for families in mid-Missouri with a specific focus on children up to age five years in underserved populations. The lack of information, activity kits, and resources about developmental milestones in the first five years was identified as an area of improvement within the program. Methods: Information about the five major areas of development was organized into handouts. Ideas were compiled for activities for each area of development. Supplies for selected activities were collected and organized. Activity kits containing handouts and five to ten activities targeting different ages, abilities, and skills were created. Activity kits were distributed to families. Additional information was provided via blog post on the program’s website. Results: The major developmental areas of communication/language, cognitive/problem solving, gross motor, fine motor, and social/emotional were identified as areas to separately create activity kits. For each area, an information handout was created with a total of fifteen milestones and ten activity ideas separated into five sections based on age. Activity kits contained the handouts and materials for a variety of activities. Conclusion: Understanding developmental markers can identify developmental delays and ensure early intervention if necessary. By providing information and activity kits about developmental milestones, First Chance for Children is improving outcomes for children in mid-Missouri.
