Abstract
Using organizational support and the Hertzberg motivation-hygiene theory as a lens of analysis, this study examines how the COVID-19 pandemic impacted feelings of burnout among women journalists at digital magazines, Apartment Therapy and The Strategist. Drawing on theory, 'motivators' and 'hygiene' factors such as perceived organizational support, role overload, work-life balance and the logistics of affiliate marketing as a revenue model, this study used semi-structured interviews to understand how women journalists navigated the disruptions of the pandemic and whether these circumstances impacted feelings of burnout within this demographic. This study found that women journalists with varying degrees of industry experience are dealing with burnout. Across both The Strategist and Apartment Therapy, the burnout trend appears to be attributed to both diminished perceived organizational support and role overload during the pandemic. This study also provides actionable, practical solutions for women journalists handling pandemic-related challenges and experiencing burnout.
