Abstract

"Every minute matters for emergency room patients. It is common for University Hospital to receive transfer patients from other hospitals, however many of their diagnostic test data is not received with the patient. This sometimes leads to a delay in the care patients receive due to repeat tests being performed. Tests in the radiology field often require the use of ionizing radiation, which can be harmful to patients in large quantities over a short span of time. Therefore LifeImage was adopted by University of Missouri Healthcare (UMHC) to bridge this gap for patients. LifeImage is a secure cloud based storage archive that allows multiple cooperating hospitals to share, view, and download past radiological studies done on transfer patients. It sometimes takes hours for images from outside facilities to be uploaded to the Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS) of this hospital. X-ray technologists sometimes do not have the time to send exams from LifeImage to PACS in the midst of other job duties. This creates a delay in care for the patient, and may also result in exams being repeated unnecessarily. Thus resulting in additional radiation exposure and cost to the patient. This also adds to the workload of especially the two midnight technologists who have to service the entire hospital. As radiology professionals, we have a responsibility to guard patients from being over exposed to radiation, and to provide care as quickly as possible."--Introduction.
