Abstract
"The rolling hills of the Ozarks comprise one of Missouri's most scenic and valuable resources. Because the terrain is rugged and the soil shallow, a large percentage of the area is in grass and legumes. Such conditions spell cow country. The cow, with huge capacity for a wide range of forage plants, can convert otherwise unmerchantable roughages into needed milk and meat. Cattle came to this area with the first settlers. They do their job to the best of their ability in spite of the fact that man hasn't done the best job of providing them with optimum conditions. This Ozark Beef Cow-Calf Program came into being because there is a great opportunity to increase net returns simply by making conditions more favorable for the beef cow. Let's take a look at conditions in the Ozark cow country as they are now."--Foreword.
