Abstract

The current state of fast-paced media perpetuates an environment where political scandals can quickly escalate and devolve into significant threats to both the credibility and the career of political figures. There is often a dissonance between a political figure's response to such a crisis and the perception of their constituents as well as their overall public image. This study delves into the intricate dynamic of crisis communication within political contexts. A special focus has been placed on the constituent's reaction to scandals and the subsequent attempts at image repair by the affected parties. These individuals are marked by constant scrutiny and the public is rapidly fed information designed to maintain vigilance. This research examines the application of apologia in political contexts as a response to political scandals. The true sentiments and perceptions of constituents were gauged through the use of semi-structured interviews in this qualitative study. This study identifies patterns and outcomes that can inform future crisis communication strategies. By focusing on the strategies political actors employ during times of crisis, a greater understanding of the interplay between the application of apologies and strategic silence can be formed. The insights derived from this research are intended to provide valuable guidance for public relations practitioners who seek to maintain the reputations of political figures while redressing political scandals. This study contributes to the existing body of quantitative research through the examination of responses to scandals and their impact on constituencies. It provides a deeper awareness of crisis management strategies utilized by politicians and how they impact public perception and trust. This research offers insights into the effectiveness of various image repair tactics from the perspective of voters. Ultimately, aiding political figures and their advisors through the process of navigating the complex landscape of public opinion during times of crisis.
