Abstract

As often as "hate speech" incidents occur on college and university campuses, little research has been conducted on the experience of Equity and Compliance administrators at public colleges and universities who work to respond to and resolve such incidents on their campuses. The purpose of this study was to better understand how public college and university Equity and Compliance administrators have responded to "hate speech" incidents on their own campuses, by exploring the challenges they face when responding to incidents, what training or preparation they received to respond to "hate speech" incidents, and what recommendations they would provide to others responding to "hate speech" incidents on their campus. Participants described challenges when responding to incidents including no shared definition of "hate speech," world events, and their own mental health and wellbeing. Participants provided information about their training and preparation to respond to "hate speech" incidents which includes backgrounds in law and law enforcement. Participants also shared recommendations for administrators who are tasked with responding to "hate speech" incidents, including increased training and education for campus communities regarding the First Amendment, building a response team, and having a plan in place before an incident occurs.
