Abstract
Journalists are deeply involved in the framing of climate change science and risk communication related to climate change. The current field of research regarding climate change media examines how specific aspects of climate change science, like temperature targets and scientists' metaphors, are framed by news media. However, little research assesses what journalists consider when deciding to frame climate change, and what they view as their role in framing climate change. Given the complex nature of climate science, uncertainties surrounding climate science and existing research that demonstrates the prevalence of climate change framing in journalistic communication, the field of climate change media research would benefit from further understanding of the decision-making processes that journalists undergo when writing about climate change. This project assesses the thoughts of eight environmental journalists through semi-structured interviews to delve deeper into understanding journalists' rationale for how they choose to frame climate change risks and solutions, and how they view their role as journalists.
