Abstract
Accurate measures of demand for water oriented outdoor recreation are of primary importance in the development of land and water resources. As the population increases, and competitive pressures mount for land and its various uses, development add preservation of areas for recreational use for both the present and future generations becomes a major national problem. The work that was undertaken in this research was guided by two major objectives: 1) to inventory the socio-economic characteristics of the users of a particular area that were believed to be determining factors in the demand for water-oriented outdoor recreation and to determine the characteristics of the facilities desired by potential users; 2) to identify the factors that affected the demand for water-oriented outdoor recreational facilities in the St. Louis, Missouri area and to estimate their effect upon the activities of the people. Those socio-economic characteristics believed to be significant were annual family income, leisure time, education, sex, race, age, occupation, childhood home, and number of people in the family who were employed. Interviews from 1,000 households, statistically selected, were taken in St. Louis City and St. Louis County, Missouri. Variance and covariance analyses using zero-one variables to measure qualitative variables were used. The factors found to be significant were: annual income, education, sex, race, age, and occupation. The degree of satisfaction of the population was also determined, and satisfaction indexes for various groups of the population and for various activities for all groups, were developed.
