Abstract

"In order to maintain herd numbers, commercial cow-calf operations must purchase or develop females to replace culled cows. Decisions relative to replacement females are economically consequential for the farm or ranch. Different strategies can be effective for different operations, so options should be considered carefully. Many commercial cow-calf operations find it more economical to purchase bred heifers or even bred cows rather than developing heifer calves as replacements. For other operations, heifer development may be economical, but genetic considerations may favor development of purchased heifers rather than heifer calves produced by the operation. Nevertheless, it remains common to develop an operation's own heifer calves as potential replacements, and these selection decisions should be made with long-term profitability in mind."--First page.
