Abstract

Stroke remains a significant health care challenge, as it is the third leading cause of death in the United States and a primary contributor to long-term disability. Despite advancements in treatment, stroke recurrence rates are on the rise, further demonstrating the need for effective prevention strategies. The purpose of this paper is to synthesize current literature highlighting the critical role of public awareness and patient education in the impact of stroke recurrence rates. This paper discusses the lack of understanding among patients and caregivers regarding stroke risks and preventive measures, often heightened by health literacy barriers. Occupational Therapy (OT) emerges as a key player in stroke prevention playing a vital role in patient education on risk factors, symptom recognition, and prevention strategies. However, a collaborative effort amongst health care disciplines is essential to ensure comprehensive education and support for stroke survivors and caregivers. Addressing these challenges, health care professionals can work towards reducing stroke recurrences and improve knowledge on recognizing stroke.
