Abstract
Children in schools are increasingly experiencing emotional and behavioral disorders, impacting their mental health and occupational performance. Occupational therapy (OT) plays a crucial role in addressing these challenges within the school setting, aligning with federal laws such as the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). The Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS) framework is particularly effective in addressing the diverse needs of students including mental health, with occupational therapy practitioners (OTPs) serving as Specialized Instructional Support Personnel (SISP) according to ESSA. There are some limitations in how schools would facilitate and implement the MTSS framework to meet the mental health needs of students with the extensive number of professionals across various disciplines serving to meet the mental health needs of students. This project was focused on meeting with Francis Howell School District, the top district in St. Charles County, and Fairmount Elementary, the largest elementary school, to determine if they are currently meeting the mental health needs of their students and how they can better support their students’ mental health needs. The goal of the project was to advocate for the OT profession, educate school-based professionals regarding OT’s role in mental health in the school system, and develop evidence-based resources to best support and meet the mental health needs of students of utilizing the MTSS framework.
