Abstract

This investigation has been a comparative study of the monotonic and fatigue properties of two high performance aerospace fibers currently used in many aircraft applications. The specimens were: 1) Hercules Magnamite Carbon Fiber Type IM6 2) Hercules Carbon Fiber Type AS4 These fibers were set in the same epoxy resin MY720.HT976, a typical aerospace resin. Specimens were quasi-isotropic with the following stacking sequence [0/[plus or minus]45/90]2S. Five tensile tests were performed for each kind of fiber in order to obtain ultimate strength data from which stress amplitude data for fatigue tests could be determined. In fatigue testing the stress ratio was 0.1 and the loading frequency was 5 Hz. During fatigue testing loadelongation hysteresis loops were plotted at various numbers of cycles, from which dynamic stiffness degradation was monitored. Tensile tests results indicated that IM6 fibers are stronger and stiffer than AS4 fibers. Fatigue results indicated that IM6 fibers have better fatigue properties than AS4 fibers.
