Abstract
The influence of the mineral nutrients upon growth has been the subject of much investigation. It has been found that certain of these are absolutely necessary to all life. Nevertheless, most, if not all, of the chemical compounds that have been used in the preparation of nutrient solutions are at certain concentrations very injurious. There are in addition, however, many substances that are poisonous to living organisms, even in very dilute solutions. It is the object of this investigation: 1) to determine the influence of various media on the growth of Monilia sitophila (Mont.) Sacc. And, in some cases, of a few other molds: 2) to determine the toxic effects of a number of different salts, with special reference to the influence of a few organic substances, such as are often used in the preparation of culture media.
