Abstract

Patient acuity in an acute care hospital is an essential aspect to make balanced, equitable assignments for nursing staff. Unbalanced workloads creates a risk for patient safety events and reduction in patient satisfaction scores. Literature shows quality of care and nursing satisfaction are key stakeholders in this situation (Eastman, 2022). Nurse assignments based on clustering by patient room location overlooks acuity, creating unbalanced, inequitable and potentially unsafe assignments related to nursing workload. Clairvia Acuity not updated during and post-COVID created unreliable patient acuity scores.
