Abstract
[ACCESS RESTRICTED TO THE UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI AT REQUEST OF AUTHOR.] The thesis and exhibition "HARRISON BERGERON: A Multimedia Extravaganza" presented by David Spear in fulfillment of his Masters of Fine Art academic requirement is an intense weaving of performance, painting, video, historical and popular culture, appropriation and reference, all which correspond with modes of representational Art. Using concise research on Historical painting as a catalyst, Spear has created a fictitious painter, Harrison Bergeron, to parallel "Folly" from the classic historical text "In Praise of Folly" by Desiderius Erasmus. This thesis is meant to firmly place the fictional Harrison Bergeron, his artworks and Spear into the specific historical lineage of "trickster", not merely to trick, but to fully explore the timeless re-occurrence of invented persona as a central device used to investigate human expression, history and fine art.
