Abstract

"The discussion of what needs to be done to the soil to encourage crop growth and what tillage tools do it best has been going on for a long time. As the source of power progressed from man himself to draft animals to tractors, a variety of tillage methods and tools were developed. Some received only limited acceptance, but some-like the moldboard plow-were widely accepted. As more power became available and farmers were able to make better use of available time, they were tempted to• 'over-till'' the soil. Now we find that too much tillage causes problems. Traffic pans result from compaction caused by implements and tractors traveling over the soil. Soil becomes puddled (water won't infiltrate) and hard to work."--First page.
