Abstract
This research examines how traditional journalists transitioned into journalist programmers. The researcher conducted semi-structured interviews of nine journalist programmers. The research identified three key findings: Traditional journalists who made the transition to a journalist-programmer said that the desire to create distinctive works of journalism that required programming was their primary motivation. They learned how to program by working on journalism projects for their newsrooms or themselves. They all relied on other journalist-programmers, who already made the transition, and journalism communities to learn their craft.
