Abstract

Introduction: This Capstone project aimed to increase awareness of occupational therapy's (OT's) valuable role in pelvic health by utilizing a collaborative approach to educational resource development in the outpatient pelvic health setting. Literature Review: Pelvic health disorders are increasingly common in the United States. The holistic and comprehensive approach offered by OTs is especially beneficial in the pelvic health setting due to the complex nature of pelvic floor dysfunction. However, OT's role in pelvic health remains under-recognized, with gaps in awareness among healthcare providers about the comprehensive support OTs can offer. Methods: A quantitative approach was used to assess the impact of a collaborative approach to educational resource development at Legacy Physical Therapy. The Capstone project involved creating educational resources in collaboration with physical therapists (PTs) to develop a community education program. Data were collected through pre- and post-questionnaires to evaluate changes in five pelvic health PT's understanding of OT's role in pelvic health. Results: Participants reported high satisfaction with the educational resources developed during the Capstone experience. Questionnaire responses highlighted an increased understanding of OT's role in pelvic health and a stronger appreciation for interprofessional collaboration after engaging in the collaborative experience with the OT Capstone student. Discussion: The findings suggest that interprofessional collaboration experiences between PTs and OTs can effectively foster a greater understanding of OT's unique role in pelvic health. Conclusion: Continued advocacy and intentional education efforts, including interprofessional collaboration experiences are needed to increase awareness of OT's role in pelvic health settings.
