Abstract

The mass and energy balances describing transcient behavior of two continuous flow stirred tank reactors in series are written in dimensionless form, for a first order reaction. It is shown that the maximum number of steady states is nine. Parameter values are also given for which this maximum occurs. Some global statements about maximum multiplicity in the case of n - CSTR's in series are made. In the search for a strange attractor, the dynamics are found to result in periodic orbits. A setting which could result in chaotic behavior, must consider finding a homoclinic orbit in the second reactor while maintaining the first one as close as possible to a hopf bifurcation point.
