Abstract
"Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the parametric instability of the stiffened cylindrical shell. The boundaries of the parametric instability regions are determined theoretically for a simply supported shell which is subjected to a periodic uniform axial load. Three parametric instability theories are developed for the stiffened cylindrical. The classical discrete stiffener theory and the classical smeared stiffener theory are both based upon the classical membrane assumption. These two theories are used, primarily, to compare the relative validity of the smeared stiffener assumption with respect to the discrete stiffener assumption. The third theory, the eccentric load smeared stiffener theory, is based upon the recently developed nonlinear prestress assumption. This theory is employed to examine the axial load eccentricity effects upon the parametric instability region boundaries."--Page 1.
