Abstract

Between Glimpses of Blue is a work for wind ensemble and fixed media that uses the visual imagery of clouds as the inspiration for the piece, and as a direct influence for the form and orchestration. Cirrus, Stratus, Cumulus, Nimbocumulus, as well as my own memories and impressions associated with clouds influence each section of the piece. These dictated the form of this piece through the progression from light to dense clouds. For instance, the beginning is influenced by the light and high-altitude Cirrus clouds, and exemplifies this with musical material that is sparse and consists of higher frequencies and pitches. The Cirrus section then progresses to Cumulous in mm.24-81 with denser orchestration to reflect this change. The climax of the work is inspired by Nimbocumulous clouds and features dense orchestration and low, thundering sonorities in the ensemble and fixed media. The fixed media is comprised of samples of airplanes, rain, thunderstorms, and water that are mostly filtered and altered from their source material. However, some storm and rain samples are left relatively unaffected to create a literal experience of being in a storm. These samples were recorded and chosen because of their association with clouds. In addition to using samples to create sonorities that the wind ensemble cannot, the fixed media utilizes instrumental-style sounds from two sampler banks and a virtual analog synthesizer. These sounds bridge the sonic gap between the notes of wind ensemble and noise-based samples in the fixed media. This is accomplished by sharing similar melodic and harmonic material with the ensemble, while also adding timbres similar to the other samples used in the fixed media. Between Glimpses of Blue was commissioned by a fifteen-member consortium of college, university, and high school wind ensembles including: Washington State University, Brigham Young University, Central Washington University, Eastern Michigan University, Elon University, Kaiser High School, Mount Spokane High School, Pacific University, Seattle Pacific University, Stephen F. Austin University, University of Kansas, University of Montana, University of South Carolina, Western Oregon University, and the University of Missouri – Kansas City.
