Abstract

The main objective of this paper is to improve the accuracy of the prediction of surface flaw fatigue life under constant amplitude loading. The concepts of crack closure and effective stress intensity factor are used to formulate a table of fatigue crack growth rate data from tests performed on compact tension specimens. This data is then used to analyze fatigue growth for surface flaws. A computer program is written to calculate flaw life predictions which are then compared to values of flaw life determined experimentally.
