Abstract

"With these eloquent words from his study The Gospel Sound: Good News and Bad Times, Tony Heilbut identifies the essence of a music that has sustained and sweetened the lives of millions of Americans through its powers of exhilaration and comfort. Indeed, the black church is one of the institutions that defines the American experience, and its musical tradition is among the glories of human achievement in modern times. That music should serve as the handmaiden of organized religion appears to be a universal truth. Because of its capacity to intensify experience, its potential for individual revelation, its power for shaping communal identity, and its usefulness for inculcating the mysterious details of faith, music has become a central feature and method of worship in all of the world's great religions. Underlying these functions is the notion that the faithful should glorify their God with the finest of their God-given talents. The appreciation of music as a unique object of beauty among human accomplishments justifies its appropriation as prayer and praise. The details of musical practice are, of course, as diverse as individual belief systems. Some religious traditions have developed elaborate musical customs of considerable formality to be executed by a special class of professional musician; others have stressed the participation of all true believers in the form of congregational singing. The conventions of African-American music-making offer a freedom of expression well beyond the norms of other comparable practices."--Program Notes.
