Abstract

News avoidance is an emerging line of research with journalism studies, but existing studies haven't considered why audiences might avoid certain types of news. This paper analyzed survey responses of U.S. news consumers to see what reasons they avoid economic news. It then compared those reasons with what economics reporters working at general interest news publications believe cause news avoidance. This paper found that readers don't avoid economic news because it's too difficult to follow or irrelevant to their lives as many of the reporters initially thought. It then offers tips for journalists aiming to better inform mass audiences about economic news.
