Abstract

Structurally deficient bridges are becoming more and more prevalent. The need to identify and correct these deficiencies is becoming increasingly apparent. This task is assigned to bridge inspections. With such a critical role in ensuring the public's safety system of checks is necessary to ensure the inspections performed are effective. Many of these checks can be found in the various Quality Control (QC) and Quality Assurance (QA) programs at the state level. In order to fulfill NBIS requirements all states must have quality systems in place, and while some states have very thorough programs others are simply almost inexistent. In order to improve these programs guidelines for implementing quality control and quality assurance in bridge inspections are necessary to ensure that inspections and inspection programs are effective in identifying and correcting deficiencies.
