Abstract

[ACCESS RESTRICTED TO THE UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI--COLUMBIA AT REQUEST OF AUTHOR.] Thermal cracking and rutting are deteriorations that significantly affect asphalt pavements in the United States (US). Thermal cracking is a prevalent problem in the coldest areas, whereas rutting is a pavement damage more characteristic of warmer parts of the country. Relevant literature review has suggested that asphalt materials need to be characterized based on environmental and loading conditions at which mixtures will be exposed during their service life. Hence, mixture design based on performance testing plays an important role to ensure a desired field behavior.
