Abstract
[ACCESS RESTRICTED TO THE UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI AT REQUEST OF AUTHOR.] Dental composites suffer from inadequate mechanical properties and formation of secondary caries, which could lead to the increased failure rate of these applied dental composites and much shorter longevity in comparison with amalgam. With the intention of improving the mechanical properties and extending the survival lifetime of dental composites, original and surface modified zinc oxide nanofillers including nanoparticles and nanowhiskers were fabricated and small mass fractions were incorporated into the dental matrix of the dental composite. The ZnO incorporated composites were then evaluated with mechanical and antibacterial tests; mechanical tests measured flexural strength through three-point bending and biaxial flexural tests and antibacterial effectiveness was assessed against Lactobacillus acidophilus ATCC 4356 using a MTT assay kit. Water absorption and solubility values were also analyzed with specifications known to the industry. According to the experimental results and analysis, it was concluded that the addition of ZnO nanofillers can increase the flexural strength, however, there was no significant difference in abilities to hinder bacteria growth.
