Abstract

Positive physical and mental health benefits have been found through the participation in physical activity (Moss et al., 2020). These benefits can be seen directly in both the able-bodied and disabled populations. Due to many barriers, disabled individuals are less likely to have access to appropriate sporting programs and have decreased access to the equipment necessary to participate in sports (Sahlin & Lexell, 2015). These barriers can include environmental, such as lack of adequate facilities and equipment, and personal, such as health risks (Jaarsma et al., 2014). To address this, adaptive sports have been created to address the lack of physical programs. Leadership within adaptive sports is vital for its continuation as a service for the community. Oftentimes, individuals volunteer their time to help support disabled athletes and their improvement in sport. However, the lack of compensation volunteers, time commitment, and burnout receive may cause a lack of commitment to the project. To address this gap in volunteer retention, connections between local Universities and Colleges should be further initiated. Additionally, there are an abundance of national and statewide grants that provide financial support to adaptive sporting programs to offset costs and to encourage adaptive sporting initiatives. Access to financial and community support would allow more individuals within mid-Missouri to have an opportunity to participate in adaptive sports, opening doors for individuals to reap the benefits. As disabled individuals have an increased opportunity to participate in adaptive sports programming, said demographic may have access to health management opportunities; both mentally and physically.
