Abstract
"It has been customary to regard pageant-wagon staging as the method, and the pageant-wagon as the predominant structure, utilized in the performance of the medieval drama in England. The certainty that this view was correct has led students of the subject to ignore other possibilities of staging, even when there has been evidence that other possibilities existed. Stage-directions such as those which occur in The Castle of Perseverance and in the Passion Play of the N. Towne Cycle have been passed off too often with the shrugging comment, "This play seems intended for 'stationary' staging." Such evidence was regarded as an exception to the rule, so no one bothered to explain what was meant by "stationary" staging, and that was that."--Page 1.
